Truth is, everything natural has a smell or scent to it. At the grocery store, you can't walk by the vegetable section without noticing the scent of fruits and vegetables. It follows that natural organic products that contain vegetable butters, oils and extracts will also have a smell from those oils, extracts, butters or juices. In fact, the more organic ingredients are almost always more fragrant. Thats okay and normal!
There is a big huge difference between the natural scent of an ingredient, and the irritating and toxic effect of a synthetic fragrance that is chemically derived.
The details are important to take note of. If a product is scented with a real essential oil like Organic Lavender, that is not the same as a Lavender Fragrance. The Lavender Fragrance is a synthetic chemical that can be irritating and harmful, and Organic Lavender is the real deal which can be calming and soothing for your skin and your mind.
Most all baby products unfortunately contain a chemical synthetic fragrance of some sort whether its stated on the front label or not. So if you see Lavender on the front of a label, like we have on ours, its because Lavender is an essential oil with a natural botanical scent. Its still safe and gentle for your baby and should not be confused with irritating chemicals. Lavender is calming for both mind, body and spirit. Its great to use before bedtime as its a naturally relaxing scent, but its also calming for sensitive skin.

It’s a bit over 2 years since I started dreaming, researching and creating Shoosha. If there is such a thing as a beautiful obsession, then this has been it for me. In my mind right now, I am having all these flashbacks of numerous trips to drugstores, grocery stores and specialty stores to buy any product with the word natural or organic on it. I had to see what the products smelled like and what they felt like… what they were made of.
Countless nights and weekends were spent looking up every ingredient of these products in an attempt to figure out what the composition of these products were. I just couldn’t wrap my head around why it was necessary to put so many… well… toxic chemicals into our products.
Then came the unsettling realization: I had lived my entire life using creams, lotions, hairsprays and shampoos that were filled with carcinogens and other toxins. Worse still, I had no idea – not a clue – of what I was doing to myself and my children all those years.
I remember clearly a conversation with one industry expert that had sold his business to a large, well known company. I asked him about the chemicals in our products and he said, ‘women don’t care’. Good one.
Although I am still learning about the industry, my passion really lies in therapeutic and medical aromatherapy. I want to use the pure, beautiful oils and extracts that nature has given us to moisturize, protect and heal our skin. Making these products for you gives me true joy.
I hope that no matter what your day has been like, that I can make you feel a little bit better with one of our beautiful products made from organic plants that were cultivated, harvested and managed with the respect and care our earth deserves.
Tawanda!

Sorry for the quiet time after the Golden Globes, but we were busy working on a number of great things! First, we’re getting on-boarded with Whole Foods (yeah!), which we’re thrilled about – and bravo to Whole Foods for their position on GMO’s.
Second, we’ve made it into this week’s Flare Magazine! We’re in the Eco-Friendly Beauty Picks section where our yummy USDA Certified Soaps are being featured! Flare is highlighting products with Coconut ingredients, which our soaps all have, along with a number of other gorgeous ingredients like Babassu Butter and Aloe Vera.
If you have dry skin, or sensitive skin, these moisturizing soaps are perfect for you! Another little secret… the exfoliating Hazelnut Coffee Soap not only smells like a real biscotti, but it’s great for cellulite (it’s the coffee).
]]>“Active Ingredients” are the principal ingredients that protect your skin from ultraviolet rays (UVA/UVB) by either absorbing the UV rays, or reflecting the UV rays. “Inactive Ingredients” are essentially everything else that goes into your lotion. Look for great inactive ingredients that work super hard to protect your skin from damage, absorb free radicals, and are very healing such as Coconut Oil, Sea Buckthorn Seed Oil, Raspberry Seed Extract, Green Tea Extract and high oleic Sunflower oils.
I’m going to use the term ‘natural’, because minerals are not ‘organic’, and it’s these minerals that we rely upon to protect our skin from harmful UV rays. There are quite a few toxic chemicals that are too numerous to go through, that are used in sunscreens. If I don’t know what an ingredient is, I usually drop the product. I don’t we should all walk around with a chemistry degree just so we can assess what’s going onto our skin, and into our body.
When selecting your sunscreen, look for natural active ingredients like Zinc Oxide (non micronized), and Titanium Dioxide. These two ingredients are safe minerals used in combination to provide broad spectrum protection against UVA/UVB rays. Avoid products with Avobenzone, an endocrine disruptor, and Retinyl Palmitate (sometimes a label will display this as Vitamin A). This ingredient can actually increase your skin cancer risk in the presence of sunlight.
Why non-micronized zinc oxide? This is because micronized zinc oxide (nano-sized particles) can enter the body and cause harm. It’s used in formulas because it looks invisible (non-whitening) on your skin. There is a way around this whitening issue for your facial sunscreen. You can either mix it with a mineral foundation that will ‘tint’ the sunscreen, or apply it under your tinted moisturizer. Also you want to chose the non micronized zinc oxide in your sunscreen because it sits on top of the skin to deflect harmful UV rays. On a last, but an important note, micronized zinc oxide is really bad for the environment as it contributes to bleaching of our coral reefs by promoting viral infections (http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2291018/). Not cool.
